Two Gloucester County men were killed this morning when their small aircraft crashed in a wooded area near Millville Municipal Airport in Cumberland County shortly after takeoff, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The pilot of the plane was identified by New Jersey State Police as businessman William Crean, 65, of Sewell.
The passenger was a s 57-year-old Gloucester County man whose name has not yet been released by state police. Reportedly, the passenger's next of kin does not live in the area and police are having a hard time contacting a relative.
"Once airborne, the aircraft's engine went silent, and the aircraft subsequently descended into a forested area," said Jim Salmon, a spokesman for the Delaware River and Bay Authority, which leases and manages the airport, who spoke to witnesses.
The plane went down in a wooded area between Cedarville Road and Dividing Creek Road off Buckshutem Road, Salmon said.
Salmon did not have the names of the occupants of the aircraft. He said the State Police were the lead agency on scene. The cause of the crash was still being investigated.
Representatives from the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board were notified and in route to the crash site, said Salmon.
The National Weather Service today forecast heavy rain showers and thunderstorms with damaging winds in that area.
